How to Find Your IP Address on Any Device
Short answer
To find your local IP address, open your device’s network settings: on Windows, run ipconfig in Command Prompt; on a Mac, open System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details; on an iPhone, tap the (i) next to your Wi-Fi network. Your public IP, the one websites see, is shared by every device on your home network and shows up in any IP lookup.

Your device has two IP addresses that matter: a public IP that websites see, and a local IP that your router assigns on your home network. The box below shows your public IP. The sections after it show where to find the local IP on every common device, how to find your router and other devices, and how to fix addresses that look wrong.
Your public IP address
216.73.216.128
- Location
- Columbus, Ohio, United States
- Provider
- Anthropic, PBC (AS16509)
- Time zone
- America/New_York (UTC−4)
- Coordinates
- 39.96, -83.00
This is the address websites see, and the location is an estimate that can be off by a city or more. Your device's local IP (often 192.168.x.x) is a different one and only works inside your network.
The box also shows roughly where your public IP places you. Where am I explains how that location is estimated.
Note
If a VPN or iCloud Private Relay is on, the box shows the VPN or relay server’s address, not the one your internet provider assigned. On mobile data, it shows your carrier’s address instead of your home network’s.
Public vs. local IP address: which one do you need?
Your internet provider assigns one public IP address to your router. Every device on your Wi-Fi reaches the internet through it, so websites see the same public IPv4 address for all of them. Inside your home, the router gives each device its own local (private) IP, such as 192.168.1.23. Local addresses work only on your network. That’s why your device’s settings and ipconfig never show your public IP.
Local IPv4 addresses fall into three private ranges: 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255, and 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255.
| You need | Typical use | Looks like | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your public IP | Allowlisting, remote access, hosting | 203.0.113.42 | The box above, or your router’s status page (Internet or WAN IP) |
| This device’s local IP | Port forwarding, file sharing, troubleshooting | 192.168.1.23 | The device’s network settings or a command (sections below) |
| Your router’s IP (default gateway) | Opening the router’s admin page | 192.168.1.1 | Default Gateway, Router or Gateway in your network details |
| Another device on your network | Printing, casting, smart home setup | 192.168.1.40 | That device’s network screen, or your router’s list of connected devices |
The sections below cover every device in short. Each guide has the full steps, screenshots and fixes:
How to find your IP address on Windows 11 and Windows 10
All three methods show your computer’s local IP. The steps match Windows 11 version 26H2 and Windows 10 version 22H2. Microsoft describes the Settings method in Find your IP address in Windows.
Find your IP address in Windows Settings
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Network & internet.
- At the top of the page, select Properties next to the network you’re connected to.
- Find IPv4 address. That’s your computer’s local IP.
You can also select Wi-Fi > (network name) properties. For a cable connection, select Ethernet; that page lists the IPv4 address directly.
On Windows 10:
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Network & Internet.
- Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the left.
- Select the network you’re connected to.
- Under Properties, find IPv4 address.
No IPv4 address? Check that you opened the connected network, or use ipconfig.
Find your IP address with Command Prompt (ipconfig)
- Select Start, type
cmd, and select Command Prompt. - Type the command below and press Enter.
ipconfig- Find the section for your connection: Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter Ethernet.
- Read the line you need:
- IPv4 Address: your computer’s local IP.
- Default Gateway: your router’s IP.
- IPv6 Address and Temporary IPv6 Address: your IPv6 addresses, if your network uses IPv6.
ipconfig /all adds the MAC address (Physical Address) and DHCP details. Extra adapters from VPN software, virtual machines or WSL can be ignored.
Find your IP address with PowerShell (Get-NetIPAddress)
Right-click Start, select Terminal (on Windows 10, Windows PowerShell), and run:
Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv4 | Format-Table InterfaceAlias, IPAddress, PrefixOriginThe Wi-Fi or Ethernet row with PrefixOrigin set to Dhcp is the address your router assigned; 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address. Get-NetIPConfiguration also shows your router (IPv4DefaultGateway). The Windows IP address guide adds Task Manager and Control Panel, the public IP from Command Prompt, every ipconfig switch and fixes for a 169.254 address.
How to find your IP address on a Mac
The steps match macOS 27 Golden Gate, released in September 2026, and work back to macOS Ventura 13. Both methods show your Mac’s local IP; Apple explains each field in Wi-Fi settings on Mac.
Find your IP address in System Settings
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Wi-Fi in the sidebar.
- Click Details next to the network you’re connected to.
- Find IP address (your Mac’s local IP) and Router (your router’s IP).
Click TCP/IP in the window’s sidebar for the subnet mask and IPv6 address. For a cable connection, click Network in the sidebar, then your Ethernet service, Details and TCP/IP. On macOS Monterey 12 and earlier, go to System Preferences > Network instead.
Find your IP address in Terminal (ipconfig getifaddr)
Open Terminal (press Command + Space, then type Terminal) and run:
ipconfig getifaddr en0It prints your local IP. On most Macs, en0 is Wi-Fi, but on Macs with an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi is often en1. If nothing prints, try en1, or list the names:
networksetup -listallhardwareportsroute -n get default shows your router’s address on the gateway line. The Mac IP address guide adds the Wi-Fi menu shortcut, your public IP in Terminal, IPv6, MAC vs. IP and setting a manual address.
How to find your IP address on an iPhone or iPad
These steps show your local IP on Wi-Fi in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, released in September 2026, and in earlier versions.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the More Info button (the i icon) next to your network.
- Under IPv4 Address, read IP Address. Router is your router’s IP.
On mobile data, Settings shows no IP address; the box at the top shows your carrier-assigned public IP. The iPhone IP address guide covers IPv6, Private Wi-Fi Address, Personal Hotspot and fixes.
Tip
Private Wi-Fi Address on the same screen is a hardware (MAC) address, not your IP address. Your IP address is further down, under IPv4 Address.
How to find your IP address on Android (Pixel and Samsung)
Android menus differ by phone maker. If yours doesn’t match, search Settings for IP address. Both paths show your local IP on Wi-Fi.
Google Pixel (Android 17)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Network & internet.
- Tap Internet.
- Tap the settings (gear) icon next to your Wi-Fi network.
- Scroll to Network details and read IP address. Gateway is your router’s IP.
Settings > About phone also shows your IP address.
Samsung Galaxy (One UI 9)
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the settings (gear) icon next to your connected network.
- Tap View more if you see it, then find IP address.
You can also open Settings > About phone > Status information. Galaxy phones still on One UI 8 use the same paths.
How to find your IP address on a Chromebook
These steps come from Google’s Chromebook Help and show your Chromebook’s local IP.
- At the bottom right, select the time.
- Select the Wi-Fi network you’re connected to.
- At the top of the box, select Information (the i icon).
- Read the IP address and IPv6 address. The entry labeled Wi-Fi is the MAC address, not an IP.
How to get your IP address on Linux
Open a terminal and run one of these:
ip a
hostname -IIn the ip a output, find your Wi-Fi or Ethernet interface, such as wlp2s0, enp3s0 or eth0. Its inet line shows the IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.23/24, where /24 is the network size, not part of the address. Lines that start with inet6 are IPv6; skip lo, the loopback interface. On Ubuntu, Debian and many other distributions, hostname -I prints all addresses on one line. Your router’s address follows via in ip route show default. The Linux IP address guide covers the GNOME and KDE settings, servers, Docker and WSL, and setting a static IP.
Command cheat sheet: find your computer’s IP address on Windows, Mac and Linux
| Task | Windows | macOS | Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| This computer’s local IPv4 | ipconfig | ipconfig getifaddr en0 | hostname -I |
| All addresses, including IPv6 | ipconfig /all | ifconfig | ip a |
| Router (default gateway) | ipconfig (Default Gateway) | route -n get default | ip route show default |
| Devices your computer has seen on the network | arp -a | arp -a | ip neigh |
Need your public IP in a script? Our IP lookup API answers for the caller’s own address when you leave out the ip parameter:
curl -H "apikey: YOUR_API_KEY" "https://api.iplookupapi.com/v1/info?fields=ip"With a free API key, this returns your public IP. Remove fields=ip to get the location, ISP and time zone too; the info endpoint documentation lists every field. In Windows PowerShell 5.1, where curl is an alias for Invoke-WebRequest, type curl.exe instead. To check many addresses at once, such as IPs from server logs, the batch IP lookup API takes up to 1,000 per request.
How to find your router’s IP address (default gateway)
Your router has two addresses: a local one, the default gateway, which you type into a browser to open the router’s admin page, and a public (WAN) one from your internet provider, which all your devices share.
Look for the default gateway in your device’s network details:
- Windows: Default Gateway in the
ipconfigoutput. - Mac: Router in System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details.
- iPhone and iPad: Router in your Wi-Fi network’s details.
- Android: Gateway in your Wi-Fi network’s details.
- Linux: the address after via in
ip route show default.
Common defaults are 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 and 10.0.0.1, but the gateway field is the reliable answer. Type it into your browser’s address bar and sign in with the admin password from the router’s label or app. The router IP address guide lists the defaults of common routers and providers and fixes for a router page that won’t open.
How to find the IP address of a printer, Roku, smart TV or game console
Each device on your network has its own local IP. Check the device’s own network screen, or your router’s list of connected devices (next section).
- Printers show it on the network or Wi-Fi status screen of the control panel, and on a network configuration page you can print. The printer IP address guide has steps for HP, Brother, Canon and Epson.
- Roku lists it under Settings > Network > About. The Roku IP address guide also covers the mobile app and finding it without a remote.
- Smart TVs, streaming boxes and game consoles usually show it in Settings under Network or Internet, on a screen such as Network status, Connection status or About.
How to see all devices on your network and their IP addresses
Your router lists every device it has given an address to. On its admin page, look for Connected devices, Attached devices, Client list or DHCP clients; the name varies by brand. Many router apps show the same list, with each device’s name, local IP and MAC address.
On a computer, arp -a (Windows and Mac) or ip neigh (Linux) lists the devices it has recently exchanged data with, by IP and MAC address. Idle devices can be missing, so the router’s list is more complete. To check whether one device answers, ping its IP address. Use these methods only on networks you own or manage.
IPv4 vs. IPv6: why you may see two IP addresses
IPv4 addresses are four numbers from 0 to 255 separated by dots, such as 192.168.1.23. There are only about 4.3 billion of them, so routers share one public IPv4 address among many devices. IPv6 addresses are up to eight groups of hexadecimal digits separated by colons, such as 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334, where two colons stand for a run of zero groups. IPv6 has enough addresses for every device to get its own public one.
Many networks run both, and websites see whichever one the connection uses. That’s why the box may show IPv6 on one network and IPv4 on another. With IPv6, the global address in your device’s settings is usually also its public address. On Windows, websites usually see the one labeled Temporary IPv6 Address, which changes regularly for privacy. Addresses that start with fe80 are link-local and never leave your network.
Is your IP address the same on all devices?
Your public IPv4 address is the same for every device on the same router, while each device’s local IP is different. The exceptions:
- Mobile data: a phone on cellular uses your carrier’s address, often shared with many other customers.
- IPv6: each device usually has its own public IPv6 address, starting with your network’s shared prefix.
- VPN or iCloud Private Relay: websites see the server’s address, only on the device or browser that uses it. Private Relay covers browsing in Safari.
- Work and school networks often send all traffic through one shared address, sometimes in another city.
Troubleshooting: when your IP address looks wrong
Your IP address starts with 169.254
Your device got no answer from the router’s DHCP server, so it gave itself a link-local address and has no internet access. Try these in order:
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi, or unplug and replug the network cable.
- Restart the router and wait until it has fully started.
- Request a new address. On Windows, run
ipconfig /release, thenipconfig /renew. On a Mac, click Renew DHCP Lease under TCP/IP. On an iPhone, tap Renew Lease in the network’s details. - If only one device is affected, forget the network on it and join again.
If every device shows a 169.254 address, check that DHCP is turned on in the router. More causes and fixes for each device are in the 169.254 IP address guide.
Your IP address keeps changing
Local IPs come with a DHCP lease, so a device can get a new address after it reconnects. To keep a printer or camera on one address, set up a DHCP reservation (or address reservation) in the router. Phones complicate this: their private (randomized) MAC address can rotate, and the router then sees a new device. For a reservation, set Private Wi-Fi Address to Fixed on an iPhone (iOS 18 and later), or use the device MAC for that network on Android.
Your public IP is usually dynamic too and can change after a router restart or outage. For a fixed one, ask your provider for a static IP.
Tip
Reserve addresses in the router instead of typing a fixed IP into the device itself. The router then never hands that address to another device.
Your router’s internet address doesn’t match the box (CGNAT)
Turn off any VPN, then compare the Internet or WAN IP on the router’s status page with the IPv4 address in the box at the top. If they differ, or the router shows an address between 100.64.0.0 and 100.127.255.255 or a private one, your provider uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), or another router sits in front of yours. With CGNAT, you share a public IPv4 address with other customers. Browsing works normally, but port forwarding, hosting a game or camera server, and some remote-access tools won’t work over IPv4. Ask your provider for a public IPv4 address, or use IPv6 if your network has it.
The box shows the wrong city or country
IP location is an estimate based on how your provider registers and routes its addresses, not GPS. A VPN, a mobile carrier’s gateway or a company network can place you far away. If our data puts you in the wrong place, report the wrong location with the IP address from the box.
Frequently asked questions
Is my IP address the same on all devices?
Your public IPv4 address is the same for every device connected to the same router, because the router shares the one address your internet provider assigns. Each device still has its own local IP address, such as 192.168.1.23 and 192.168.1.24. A phone on mobile data, or a device with a VPN turned on, shows a different public address.
Does my Wi-Fi have an IP address?
Your Wi-Fi router has two IP addresses. Its local address, called the default gateway (often 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1), is the one you type into a browser to open the router’s settings. Its public address comes from your internet provider and is the IP that websites see for every device on your Wi-Fi.
How do I find my IP address on my Mac?
Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Wi-Fi in the sidebar, then click Details next to your network; the IP address is listed there, and clicking TCP/IP shows more detail. In Terminal, the command ipconfig getifaddr en0 prints the same address (try en1 if nothing appears). Both show your Mac’s local IP, not the public IP that websites see.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses are four numbers from 0 to 255 separated by dots, such as 192.168.1.23, and there are only about 4.3 billion of them. IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long and written in hexadecimal groups separated by colons, such as 2001:db8::1, which leaves enough room for every device to have its own public address. Many networks run both, so your device can have an IPv4 and an IPv6 address at the same time.
Why does my IP address keep changing?
Your router assigns local IP addresses through DHCP, so a device can get a new one when it reconnects or its lease runs out; a DHCP reservation in the router keeps the address fixed. Most home internet connections also get a dynamic public IP that can change after a router restart or an outage. If you need a public IP that never changes, ask your internet provider for a static IP.
Why does my IP address start with 169.254?
An address from 169.254.0.0 to 169.254.255.255 means your device got no answer from the router’s DHCP server and gave itself a link-local address, so it has no internet access. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or replug the cable, restart the router, then request a new address (on Windows, run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew). If every device on the network shows a 169.254 address, check that DHCP is turned on in the router.
