How to Find Printer IP Address: 6 Ways for HP, Brother, Canon and Epson

Updated

Short answer

Most printers show their IP address on the control panel under Wi-Fi, Network or LAN settings, and any network printer can print a network configuration page that lists it. If the printer is already installed, Windows shows the address under Printer properties > Ports, and a Mac shows it in Printers & Scanners or with the Terminal command lpstat -v. Your router’s list of connected devices shows it too.

On this page

Your printer’s IP address is one tap or one printout away: open the Wi-Fi or network screen on the printer, or print a network configuration page. If the printer is already set up, Windows, macOS, the maker’s app and your router show the address too. This guide covers each method, the menus for HP, Brother, Canon and Epson, and fixes for a missing or changing address.

You need the printer’s local (private) IP address, such as 192.168.1.25. It isn’t your public IP, which every device behind your router shares; you can see where your public IP places you. For other devices, see how to find the IP address on any device.

Find the IP address on the printer’s screen

Menu names vary by model, but most printers with a display follow this path:

  1. Tap the Wi-Fi or network icon on the home screen, or open Settings, Setup or Menu and choose Network, Wireless or LAN settings.
  2. Open the status screen, such as Wi-Fi Status, Network Status or TCP/IP.
  3. Read the line labeled IP Address or IPv4 Address.

Every network printer can print a network configuration page, also called a network status sheet. It lists the IP address, MAC address, host name and default gateway. The gateway is your router, not the printer.

  1. Open Settings, Setup or Menu on the printer.
  2. Go to Reports, Print Reports or Information.
  3. Print the network report: Network Configuration Page on HP, Network Configuration on Brother, Print LAN details on Canon, Print Status Sheet on Epson.
  4. Find IP Address or IPv4 Address in the TCP/IP section. On most home networks, you can ignore IPv6 entries such as fe80::.

Printers without a screen use a button combination; see the brand sections below or your manual.

In each app, select the printer and open its printer information or network settings. Your phone or computer must be on the same network.

Where is the IP address on an HP printer?

On touchscreen models, tap the Wireless icon to see the connection details, or print the Network Configuration Page from the Reports menu under Setup or Settings. On DeskJet and other models without a screen, press the Wireless and Information buttons together to print the network pages. In router lists, HP printers often appear as HP plus six characters of the MAC address.

Brother printer IP address

Touchscreen models start at Settings > All Settings > Network, and models with a small display start at Menu > Network. In router lists, Brother printers often appear as BRW (Wi-Fi) or BRN (Ethernet) plus the MAC address. Brother iPrint&Scan covers models that Brother Mobile Connect doesn’t support.

Canon printer IP address

On PIXMA and MAXIFY models, choose the active connection under LAN settings, then select Confirm LAN settings to view the address or Print LAN details to print it. On some models the path starts at Setup > Device settings. Canon PRINT was formerly called Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY.

Epson printer IP address

Under Settings > Network Settings > Network Status, Wi-Fi Status shows the IP address and Print Status Sheet prints it. Some models put the menu under Settings > General Settings > Network Settings. EcoTank models without a screen print the sheet with a button press listed in the manual. In router lists, Epson printers often appear as EPSON plus six characters of the MAC address.

Xerox, Lexmark and Kyocera

Office printers print the address on a report too: the Configuration Report on Xerox, the Network Setup Page on Lexmark and the Status Page on Kyocera.

Find the printer IP address in Windows 11 and 10

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Select your printer.
  3. Select Printer properties.
  4. Open the Ports tab.
  5. Find the checked port. A Standard TCP/IP Port shows the IP address in the Port column, sometimes with a prefix such as IP_.

If the port is a WSD Port, close the window, select Hardware properties and open the Web Services tab. The IP address is under Troubleshooting Information. In Windows 10, the path is Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners > [your printer] > Manage > Printer properties > Ports.

To list all printers at once, run this in Windows PowerShell:

PowerShell
Get-Printer | Select-Object Name, PortName
Get-PrinterPort | Where-Object PrinterHostAddress | Select-Object Name, PrinterHostAddress

The first line shows each printer’s port. The second shows the IP address behind each TCP/IP port; WSD and USB ports have none. Details are in Microsoft’s Get-PrinterPort reference.

Find the printer IP address on a Mac

These steps apply to macOS Ventura and later, including macOS Golden Gate. On Monterey and earlier, open System Preferences instead of System Settings.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
  2. Click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar.
  3. Click your printer.
  4. Click Options & Supplies.
  5. On the General tab, click Show Printer Web Page. The printer’s web page opens in your browser and lists the IP address in its network or TCP/IP section. For a printer added by IP address, the browser’s address bar shows it too.

The General tab itself lists the name, location, device name, driver version and model, but not the address.

In Terminal, lpstat -v lists the device address of every printer:

Shell
lpstat -v
# device for Office_Printer: ipp://192.168.1.25/ipp/print

A number after ipp://, lpd:// or socket:// is the IP address. dnssd:// means the Mac found the printer by name over Bonjour and stores no number, so use the network page or your router instead. usb:// means a USB connection.

Find the printer in your router’s device list

Your router lists every device it gave an address to, including printers without a screen.

  1. Open the router’s app, or its admin page at your default gateway address, often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  2. Sign in with the router’s admin password.
  3. Open the device list, often called Connected Devices, Attached Devices, Client List or DHCP Clients.
  4. Find the printer by name, or match the MAC address from its network page.

If you don’t know the router’s address, find your default gateway first. The same list helps with devices such as a Roku streaming player.

How to add a printer by IP address

Use this when Windows or macOS doesn’t find the printer on its own.

Add a printer by IP address in Windows 11 and 10

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  2. Next to Add a printer or scanner, select Add device.
  3. When the search ends, select Add manually next to The printer that I want isn’t listed. Microsoft’s help calls this link Add a new device manually.
  4. Choose Add a printer using an IP address or hostname, then select Next.
  5. Set Device type to TCP/IP Device.
  6. Type the address in Hostname or IP address.
  7. Leave Query the printer and automatically select the driver to use checked and select Next.
  8. Pick a driver if Windows asks, then select Finish.

In Windows 10, select Add a printer or scanner under Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, then The printer that I want isn’t listed; the option reads Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname. Microsoft covers the flow in Add or install a printer in Windows.

Add a printer by IP address on a Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  3. Click the IP button in the toolbar.
  4. Type the printer’s IP address in Address.
  5. Under Protocol, choose AirPrint if the printer supports it, otherwise Internet Printing Protocol - IPP, Line Printer Daemon - LPD or HP Jetdirect - Socket.
  6. Choose the driver under Use, then click Add.

Leave Queue empty unless the manual names one. Apple explains each field in Add a printer on Mac.

Give the printer a fixed IP address

Routers assign addresses with DHCP, so a printer can get a new one after a restart, and computers then show it as offline. A DHCP reservation keeps the address the same:

  1. Note the printer’s MAC address from its network configuration page.
  2. Open your router’s LAN or DHCP settings.
  3. Find Address Reservation, DHCP Reservation or Reserved IP.
  4. Add the printer’s MAC address with its current IP, then save.
  5. Restart the printer.

A static IP set on the printer also works if you choose an address outside the router’s DHCP range, but a reservation is easier to manage; static vs. dynamic IP addresses compares both.

Troubleshooting printer IP address problems

The IP address starts with 169.254

The printer didn’t get an address from the router and assigned itself a link-local address (RFC 3927), which computers can’t print to. Check the printer’s Wi-Fi network or Ethernet cable, restart the router and then the printer, and run the printer’s Wi-Fi setup again if needed. The 169.254 IP address guide explains the router side.

The printer is offline after its IP address changed

A TCP/IP port keeps sending jobs to the old address. In Windows, open Printer properties > Ports, select the checked port, choose Configure Port and enter the new IP in Printer Name or IP Address. On a Mac, remove a printer that was added by IP and add it again. Then reserve the address.

WSD port or TCP/IP port: which is better?

Windows often installs network printers on a WSD (Web Services for Devices) port, which sets itself up but shows no IP address and can drop after network changes. A Standard TCP/IP port points to one address and stays reliable once you reserve it. If a WSD printer keeps going offline, add it again by IP and remove the old entry.

The computer can’t find the printer

  1. Connect the computer and printer to the same network. A guest Wi-Fi keeps devices apart, and a VPN can block local devices.
  2. Compare the printer’s IP with your computer’s IP address. On most home networks, the first three numbers match, as in 192.168.1.25 and 192.168.1.60.
  3. In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Properties and set Network profile type to Private network, so Windows looks for devices.
  4. Restart the printer, the router and the computer.
  5. Ping the printer’s IP address to see whether it answers on the network.
  6. Add the printer by IP address if it still doesn’t appear.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the IP address on an HP printer?

On HP printers with a touchscreen, tap the Wireless icon on the control panel to see the connection details, including the IP address. To print it, choose Network Configuration Page in the printer’s Reports menu. On DeskJet and other HP models without a screen, press the Wireless and Information buttons at the same time to print the network pages.

How do I find my Epson printer's IP address?

On an Epson printer with a screen, open Settings > Network Settings > Network Status (on some models Settings > General Settings > Network Settings). Wi-Fi Status shows the IP address, and Print Status Sheet prints a network status sheet that lists it. Epson models without a screen print the same sheet with a button press described in the manual.

How can I check my printer's IP address without a computer?

Use the printer itself. Open the Wi-Fi, Network or LAN status screen on the control panel, or print a network configuration page from the Reports or Information menu, and read the line labeled IP Address or IPv4 Address. If the printer has no screen, check your router’s list of connected devices from a phone.

Why is my computer not finding my printer?

The printer and computer are often on different networks, for example when one uses a guest Wi-Fi, or the printer’s IP address changed after a restart. Windows also hides other devices when your network is set to Public. Print a network configuration page, check that the printer and computer use the same network, and add the printer by its IP address if it still doesn’t appear.

Why does my printer's IP address keep changing?

Your router hands out addresses with DHCP and can give the printer a different one after a restart or a long time offline. Computers set up for the old address then show the printer as offline. Create a DHCP reservation for the printer’s MAC address in your router so it always gets the same IP.

Can I find my printer's IP address with Command Prompt?

Yes. In Command Prompt, arp -a lists the IP and MAC addresses of devices your PC has contacted recently, so you can match the printer’s MAC address. For a printer that’s already installed, PowerShell is more direct: Get-PrinterPort | Select-Object Name, PrinterHostAddress shows the IP address behind each Standard TCP/IP port.
